Northern Iowa Therapy is honored to accept Iowa Occupational Therapy Association's 2016 Advocate of the Year Award!
Thank you LeAnne O'Brien, Iowa Occupational Therapy Association president, for nominating us!
LeAnne had this to say:...
I nominate Northern Iowa Therapy in Waverly Iowa for Occupational Therapy Advocate for 2016 through the Iowa Occupational Therapy Association.
Northern Iowa Therapy exemplifies the meaning of 'advocacy' for Occupational Therapy in the state of Iowa. Their leadership volunteers time to Allen College for the OT advisory board, to ensure that the state of Iowa is able to provide Occupational Therapy services to the rural communities through enhancement of education within the state, versus relying on out-of-state occupational therapists to relocate to Iowa for employment.
In 2015, IOTA was able to ascertain a position on the Medical Assistance Advisory Council Board through the Iowa Department of Human Services and along with myself, they have graciously volunteered to participate and represent IOTA at these meetings. Their focus has been to share patient care stories and OT billing situations that were relevant during the transition of state managed Medicaid to the Managed Care Organizations (MCO) management of Medicaid, starting in April 2016, to ensure all Iowa constituents receive the Occupational Therapy services they deserve.
Northern Iowa Therapy has tirelessly organized and perservered in continuing almost weekly meetings with the three MCOs, to ensure that the transition of the Iowa Medicaid system and payment for OT services has been granted. They have traveled to the state capital to advocate for constituents who received Occupational Therapy services providing testimony from patients who have received OT through Northern Iowa Therapy. Their perseverance in getting concrete and consistent answers from the MCO's has been monumental in the ongoing journey of patient care and payment for services through the managed Medicaid program.
Northern Iowa Therapy's dedication to the profession of Occupational Therapy, not only because this is part of their professional business, but more so, because they know it is the right thing to do for Iowa residents, to receive Occupational Therapy services for a higher quality and productive life! As an occupational therapist, I am proud to nominate Northern Iowa Therapy for the Occupational Therapy Advocate of the Year 2016, because through their advocacy for Occupational Therapy, significant expansion of OT services are being put in the forefront of payer sources as well as they have assisted in significantly increasing the public perception of what Occupational Therapy is!
Respectfully Submitted by Leanne O'Brien, OTR/L, IOTA President
Northern Iowa Therapy-KIDS has recently been approved to do on-site pediatric speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy at St. Paul's School in Waverly and at Waverly Childcare and Preschool in Waverly. Parents, if your child is a patient at St Paul's School or at Waverly Childcare and Preschool and you would like your child's therapy done during the day while your child is at either of these locations, please contact us.
Benefits for having pediatric speech, occupational and/or physical therapy done during the day while your child is at school or daycare include the following:
- We can better see how your child functions in their typical setting.
- Your child is not as tired and will have more focus to participate in therapy versus coming to therapy after being at school or preschool all day.
- Therapy done during the day is more convenient for families. When you pick up your child at the end of the day, therapy is already done allowing for more family time.
- More consistent therapy means better results. Occasionally visits are missed because of scheduling conflicts families have in the after school hours.
- This arrangement fosters better communication with daycare and school staff regarding approaches that may work best for your child.
